Choosing the right pump for ponds and water features starts with understanding the application's purpose, whether it's water circulation, filtration, aeration, waterfalls or decorative fountains. Contractors should also consider water chemistry and select pumps with materials compatible with pond treatment chemicals to ensure reliable, long-term performance.

TDH includes the total vertical lift plus friction losses from piping, fittings, filters and valves. Contractors should use manufacturer performance curves to select a pump that delivers the required flow at the calculated TDH and ensure plumbing matches the pump's discharge size for optimal efficiency.

Step 1: Flow Rate

  • Length (12 ft) x Width (9 ft) x Depth (3 ft) x 7.48 = 2,423 gallons
  • Include waterfall: Width of stream (1 ft) x 1,200 GPH = 1,200 gallons
  • Total flow rate + the waterfall calculation – 2,423 + 1,200 = 3,623

Step 2: TDH

Select a pump with a maximum head rating that meets or exceeds the required Total Dynamic Head (TDH). In this example, the pump sits at the bottom of a 3-foot-deep pond, and the waterfall rises 5 feet above ground level. Together, the pump must overcome a total vertical lift of 8 feet.

Step 3: Performance Curve:

Use the flow rate (3,623 gph) and TDH (8 ft) to find on the curve what pump model your installation requires.
